Todavía no había entrenadores por aquel tiempo, siendo los equipos seleccionados y entrenados por un comité, con un capitán de equipo muy influyente. Los onces del Oxford y del Chatham llegaron a la final de la Copa inglesa por segunda vez, ahora con siete nuevos jugadores cada uno. Esta tercera final de la “FA Cup” ya contaba con cinco extranjeros, aunque algunos de ellos se habían nacionalizado. Uno de ellos era William Stepney Rawson (14.10.1854-4.11.1932), que había nacido en Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica, y su hermano Herbert Edward Rawson (3.9.1852-18.10.1924), que jugaba en el otro equipo y que había nacido en Mauricio, una isla africana al este de Madagascar, en el Océano Índico. Ambos fueron internacionales con Inglaterra. El hermano menor llegó a ser más tarde un buen árbitro.

Francis Hornby Birley (14.3.1850-1.8.1910), fue un centrocampista ambidiestro difícil de superar que poseía un entusiasmo incontenible. Estudió en el Winchester College y el University College (Oxford) y fue también un jugador de críquet muy bueno. Este inglés internacional era el pilar del Wanderers. El ”Indio” Henry Waugh Renny-Tailyour del Royal Engineers anotó los dos tantos de la semifinal.
